High School vs College Essay The transition from high school to college is sometimes difficult, but with a little knowledge and planning, students can make the transition very easily. There are some major differences between high school and college. There are differences in the teachers, the cost, and the personal responsibility involved. In high school, teachers are more helpful, there is relatively no cost, and although students are encouraged to be responsible, responsibility lies mainly with their parents. In high school, students have it pretty easy. Teachers are there to guide and help students, and often will stay after school, offer extra credit or extended projects to help in the learning process. Teachers also often communicate with students’ parents to ensure they know what is going on in the classroom. There is relatively little cost involved with public high school. There are participation fees for sports and a fee paid at the beginning of the year, but textbooks are provided free of charge. Some more hands-on classes will have additional fees, but most of these classes are electives and do not have to be taken. As far as personal responsibility, in high school, students are expected to behave as if they are preparing to be adults. They are given breaks from time to time, but are expected to behave as if they were training for the real world and to take their studies seriously. However, responsibility falls on the parents if a student is struggling in school or not attending classes. In college, teachers are not just teachers any more, the expenses are great, and personal responsibility is one of the lessons most hard learned. In college, teachers are not referred to as â€Å"teachers†. They are â€Å"instructors† or â€Å"professors†. They have high degrees of education in their field, and are passionate about their subjects, often striving for perfection from their students. College professors often do not accept late or sloppy work and some do not accept extra credit or projects. Many have so many students in a class that they often are not even aware who is or is not in class. College instructors never speak to students’ parents about grades; it is a violation of confidentiality. College is quite expensive, however. In addition to tuition, there are fees for books and supplies and labs. College textbooks can cost up to $150 per class. While parents usually help to offset the costs of college, personal responsibility falls solely on the student. Many students attend colleges away from home, so they need to begin doing their own laundry, cleaning, and cooking. Many will also work part-time or full-time jobs in addition to school to pay for the extras that their parents no longer provide. Personal responsibility is one of the lessons that college teaches students. Although they are both institutions of learning, high school and college are very different. This theory depicts that people usually develop the motivation to commit a crime and the skills that they require in the crime process as a result of the people that they interact with. The social learning theories speculate that young people learn the ways in which they are supposed to behave depending on the ways in which their elders responds to their violation or the compliance on the rules (Banks, 2013). The appropriate behavior is indicated in the society through rewarding the morally acceptable behavior and punishing or imposing penalties on the transgressions. With time, the transgression is usually associated with the sanction thereby producing the sanction even at times when there is no one available to c heck on the sanctions. It is as a result of this process that the young people can learn how to control themselves by the legal and the moral codes. The other theory which explains why people commit the crime is the strain theory. The best response to address this issue is focusing on the positive which can be achieved through an administrative decision focusing on pushing out the positive content. The third issue that the correctional professionals are faced with on a regular basis is inadequate training among the midlevel supervisors. This is a challenge because most of the frontline supervisors who are required to evaluate the incidents where force should be used do not have the required knowledge and skills to do it in the right manner. This results in the situation whereby the officers can get away with their improper behaviors and thus ineffectiveness of the correctional system. In addition to this, the reports are not written in the right way, and the reviews are merely done, and when done they are poor. The best response to address this issue is ensuring that the correctional professionals are well trained such that they are well all rounded on all the roles and responsibilities that they are supposed to play in the organization. In addition to this, the state should secure enough funds for the training of the supervisors and other staff working in the correctional faci lities. The Signal-Man By Charles Dickens Dickens gives a description of the railway cutting with intricate detail and encompasses it with a cloud of gloomy and a depressive mood. He associates places and objects with certain impressions which produce this large image of negative and horrifying vibes and feelings. When the narrating character has the first acquaintance of the railway cutting and signalman's box, Dickens bombards you with adjectives and depictions of a morbid and 'depressing' atmosphere. He called it a 'dungeon' which implies a sense of torture and a ghastly horrid nature. The very description of the signalman's box creates a feeling of suffocation and being trapped. 'On either side, a dripping wet wall of jagged stone, excluding all but a strip of sky; the perspective one way was only a crooked prolongation of this great dungeon;' The emphasis on the gloominess and 'forbidding' 'deadly' environment conveys the relevance to the storyline of pre-cursor of death and constant haunting and reminder of danger. Dickens also seems to always entertain the possibility of a supernatural presence. For example, the narrator had felt the dread of a following train, and when the wind 'struck a chill' to him. This allows for an interpretation of the apparent interference of a ghost in the plot like an outer world inspiration. The story throughout contains the ingredients and factors that make up a horror story, for example the chill, cold, 'gloomy', dark and 'deadly' moods, and the returning haunting ghostly figure with its repeating gesture. This is great support for the plot and it sets style and mood and adds fear and tension. The spanking usually occurs when the children are already four years old. The study also shows that corporal punishment is more general among minorities and poor families. Apart from physical punishment, yelling and swearing in front of the children are also considered as harmful. One of the negative effects brought by physical punishment is the strong tendencies of children to develop anti-social behaviour. The idea of corporal punishment is based on offense and leads to violent behaviour both exhibited by the parent and eventually the child. Also, the child could channel the aggression to other people for example bullying their classmates in school. Besides, lying, cheating, and stealing could be traced to a child history who suffered from corporal punishment. Another side that needs to be considered is that the development of anti-social behaviour surround all socio-economic groups. According to some studies, the intended effect created by physical punishment is reversed in the long term. Spanking and slapping are proven to be ineffective strategy in promoting discipline. In reality, children who are inflicted of pain in the form of spanking and slapping have shown the highest tendencies of suffering from behavioural problems. When parents use strict methods discipline, children could exhibit anxiety, helplessness, and depression. Child abuse is often used as a counter argument to the rampant use of corporal punishment. If it’s usually done to children, such method would hinder the growth of young bodies. Moreover, children are not able to absorb  pain, which in some instances lead to injuries. Most of the reported injuries have been due to parents losing their control. There is also no direct evidence showing children fearing their parents when subjected to corporal punishment. The most common response from children includes isolation and rebelling from their parents. The corporal punishment could destroy relationships and lasting effects on the psyche of the children. Corporal punishment tends to diminish the moral values and pro-social behaviour of children. At an early age, children understand that to solve all the problems should involve violence and physical pain. Another critical element of physical punishment is its affect the mental health of the children being subjected to it. Some parents misunderstanding obedience and discipline with fear. There is the possibility that children become more secretive and this affects the dynamics of a parent-child relationship. In a nutshell, the disadvantages of physical punishment outweigh by a huge margin the benefits of spanking. Except promoting good behaviour and discipline, corporal punishment produces adverse effects. Parents have embraced traditional methods, but evidence through the years suggests that traditional physical punishment needs to end.
